"Refraction" explores the interplay between optics, self-perception, and the subjective nature of reality. I utilize a deliberate choice of vantage point to challenge the notion of singular truth in self-representation. By positioning the camera at eye level in front of a mirror, I mimic the daily perspective through which I perceive myself. This technical decision aims to highlight the subjective nature of perception, emphasizing that there is no objective reality when it comes to self-image.
At the core of the piece is the optical phenomenon of refraction, which occurs when light passes from one medium to another, such as from air to glass. As light rays bounce off my body and travel through the air, they then encounter the mirror's surface. Upon entering the glass, they undergo refraction, bending and converging before forming a virtual image behind the mirror. This virtual image is then captured by the camera, resulting in a reinterpretation of my physical form. As the camera lens refracts my image, it introduces distortion and reinterpretation, mirroring how individual perceptions shape our understanding of ourselves and others.
The technical setup of this piece serves a dual purpose. Firstly, it highlights the malleability of perception. Just as light undergoes refraction and distortion, our perceptions of ourselves and others are shaped by subjective factors, including past experiences, biases, and societal norms. By visually demonstrating the distortion taking different positions can do of my image through refraction, the artwork allows you to consider the inherent subjectivity of human perception.
Secondly, the deliberate placement of the camera at eye level in front of a mirror allows you to contemplate the role of perspective in self-representation. The mirror serves as a symbolic reflection of the subject's self-perception, while the camera lens captures this reflection from the viewer's perspective. This juxtaposition underscores the notion that there is no singular truth in self-representation; rather, our understanding of ourselves is influenced by the perspectives of both ourselves and others.
