If you're trying get faster, the tempo run (along with easy runs, a weekly long run, some speedwork, and rest) is a key part of training. It's any run, or continuous portion of a run, that is faster than your easy, conversational pace.

At a family reunion of sorts and trying to squeeze in training. I keep hearing 'you're on vacation, just take the day off,' but when you have a goal, you need to be 100% all in. Decided to do a fartlek, which is Swedish for speed play. 12x400 hard, 400 easy. The key is to not let the easy part be too slow; it's a change of pace workout. Also battled heat and the wind, but it's done. All in!!

Last night was a slow 6.5 miles in the heat. It was rough waking up early to get a run in, but with another day at 35 celcius expected, and volunteering at a track and field competition tonight, it was necessary. I need to catch up on my sleep; as that's when we recover and get stronger from the training. Can't forget to stay hydrated today too.

Water, hat, sunscreen, self-belief, grit, and determination - check. Ready for my longest, hardest run of the week, and I'm doing it on tired legs. We're running a route appropriately called blod and guts - it's hilly. I purposely run with guys faster than me for my long run, they don't care if I can't keep up, they just go. So time to get out of my comfort zone and dig deep.

Legs are sore from the race yesterday, it was a tough course with tough terrain. Decided to let my body recover and do 60 minutes on the elliptical. The elliptical is a good cross training option when you need a day without pounding, but still want to sweat.
