Though Chopin dedicated this piece to his older sister Ludwika, and it was not published until 21 years after his death in 1849. It has become one of Chopin's most famous nocturnes, for its haunting melody, and its similarities to his beloved second piano concerto.
Notably it was the last piece played live on Polish radio during the Warsaw siege in 1939, played by Polish concert pianist Władysław Szpilman, about whom the 2002 film *The Pianist* was based. When discovered in hiding from the Nazis, Spilzman played this piece for his captor, who spared his life and helped him access food and water throughout the last months of the war.
