Leather driving gloves have been popular for hundreds of years for activities like hunting, riding, and shooting. It wasn't until around the 1890s when cars became more mainstream that driving gloves began to appear as a common accessory for a driver.
The gloves were meant to protect the hands from the roughly made steering wheels, which were typically un-covered metal and subjected to the weather (if it's hot, the steering wheel would become too hot to grasp).
Leather gloves are also popular in kink for a variety of reasons (texture, color, etc).
