It was the very last song I got to hear as my high school friends and I, arms waving and dancing, raced out of the Lollapalooza grounds in Chicago to try and catch our bus home. And, for the last decade, I think I have misunderstood these lyrics. I always thought that "Spaceman" by The Killers was about an astronaut-- a man in space. But as I was singing these words, a new understanding came over me. I think this song is about a man who has had an alien encounter, reckoning the fact that no one will believe him. He has his memories, his ideas of what happened, and a mistrust even for himself. He is haunted.
