Among my group of friends; my birthday party soirées are legendary. 15-20 of my friends and lovers...everyone looking effortless and chic; most barefoot, laughing, chatting and dancing. There was always strung patio lights, candles, oversized ground cushions and rugs across the grass, the white cotton hammock at the far end of the yard. One of my beloveds, a professional DJ, would set the vibes...always with the B side gems. The vintage crystal punch bowl I scored at an estate sale, with a block of ice and grapefruit slices Floating in a sea of bourbon Julep. In June the fireflies come out and as the sun sets your eye catches little yellow flashes as they dance in the garden and in the low branches of the trees. It’s such a romantic vibe. My backyard celebrations are low-key sumptuous and mellow and full of love. I’m 35 today which feels like the perfect age; I’ve been excitedly anticipating my middle thirties and now I’ve arrived. This year though there will be no soirée or friends or luscious garden scenes. I am alone at home, the pandemic and uprising in full swing; all my friends scattered across different cities fighting the good fight. My plans today include logging online briefly to send out a few donations to BLM, then unplugging and flipping open the June copy of Conde Nast Traveler and begin researching where my first trip of the year will be while I pop the cork on a 1991 vintage and toast my solar return ✨
