I had to go to the Emergency Room today.
This head cold/lung infection/bronchitis/Covid/influenza *or whatever is happening* with me (my doctor didn’t diagnose just prescribed meds) had become so advanced today I almost passed out today while trying to stand up to get myself a glass of water. Chest palpitations and cold sweats. Hacking up a lung. Lots of fluids coming out of my face region. This infection had become advanced enough to move to my ears (the throat/nose/ears are all a connected system) and I had developed a painful earache and poor hearing. inflamed very red eardrums.
The last few days a few of **my bestest fans** were in the messages here demanding I take myself to see the doctor (*thank you for the care and concern*) and I had promised to go on Tuesday. But this afternoon my symptoms were so intense I had get to the hospital ASAP.
If I wasn’t so socially anxious x stubborn I could have been on the antibiotics I was prescribed sooner. It’s actually a little more complex than that. This is the very first time I have ever had health insurance as an adult. Literally. The last time I had health insurance and access to proper care for my wellness, I was a tëenagėr and still lived at home. The American health care system is so whack and so cost prohibitive.
Old habits die hard. so when it came time to actually utilize the health care system I have insurance for in Portugal, I didn’t know how to. Literally. I’ve just never done it before.
the last week I had just reverted back to how I’ve survived the last 20 years without insurance. Holistic remedies and rest and fluids. Thank Christ for antibiotics though.
My first hospital since moving abroad. The visit today cost me €17 for exam and €10 for 3 prescriptions. For scale: in the USA the same hospital visit + meds would have cost anywhere between $400-$800 dollars.
How good it is to have access to healthcare. Thanks europe.
