TLDR:
When I was a kid, I was nicknamed Alex Gay because it rimed with my name Alex Ray. The most painful part was how I found out.
During a one of our weekly walks around the field at church, my closest friend casually worked it into the conversation. Apparently, at the school I had left a year or more prior, I was famously (or infamously) known by the nickname “Alex Gay”
It hurt so badly finding out that kids who had never met me had made up this nickname for me. It hurt even worse knowing that my friends, who should be defending me, were taking part in it too. And in addition to all that, it struck me with fear that maybe someone would find out I really was gay.
So now I welcome you on this journey, we’re taking back this nickname and celebrating it!
