While most games in this era would have you insert a quarter to begin, and another after you die, Gauntlet was happy to take whatever you had right then and there. Initially, the people in marketing were skeptical that this would be something that people would be willing to do. However, pretty early on they saw that this was something players would do enthusiastically. The ability to insert multiple quarters is also a big reason for the game cycling instead of having a conclusive end. They were afraid that players would finish the game while having dozens of quarters still in the machine, and they didn't want to deal with gaggles of furious Gauntlet fans.
