Orthopedic needling is a form of ‘Westernized acupuncture’ that targets the neuro-muscular system directly opposed to using constitutional points as in traditional acupuncture. There are variances to orthopedic needling – trigger point known as dry needling and motor point entry needling. Trigger point needling aims at addressing a specific area of tension directly, needling at the tension site. Whereas motor point entry needling, MEP, aims to target a tiny bundle of nerves that lie within the muscle that connect it to the central nervous system. Often when our muscles contract, they continue to get bound unless practices of recovery allow them to release. Once the muscle has entered the ‘angry zone’, we cannot tell it to release on our own. MEP acts as a reset button for that muscle allowing it contract quickly then release. Often patients will feel a dull, heavy and achy sensation and/or muscle twitch, depending on which muscle is needled. After a treatment, you can expect to feel some soreness, but your range of motion will be increased, and muscle tension will be gone
